Fiber optic and copper cables

Copper Ethernet cables
Copper cable is a data transmission medium, one of the most popular ways to create an information network. The main characteristics of such cables include: durability, high data transfer rate, ductility, high heat, and current conductivity.

Twisted pair network cable
Twisted pair is a type of information transmission cable. Inside this cable lies from 1 to 8 pairs of insulated wires that twist together. Twisting is done to improve the connection of the conductors (each pair separately), in addition, the influence of external interference is reduced and is carried out equally on both wires.

Twisted pair cable is used in telecommunications and computer networks to create a physical environment through which a signal is transmitted. This type of communication is popular among Ethernet, Arcnet, Token ring, and USB. The 8P8C connector, mistakenly called RJ45, is used to connect the cable.

There are a number of varieties of network cables by the type of twisted pair, due to which almost everyone can buy the necessary option (for office, home, or a large company). The cost depends on many factors: manufacturer, category, structure, length, etc.

What types are twisted pair?
Depending on the availability of protection, twisted pair cables are divided into:

  • Shielded (English abbreviation FTP) - are laid in places of activity of powerful electromagnetic waves that are emitted by other working networks. Shielded cable is equipped with copper or aluminum foil, mesh, or spiral braid, which protect the signal from interference. The price of such a product is correspondingly higher.
  • Unshielded (English abbreviation UTP) - a cheaper kind of twisted pair cable, designed for laying in places not clogged with "alien waves".

The number of twisted pairs in the cable can vary from 2 to 8. There are single-core (consist of one copper wire) and multicore (represent a large number of copper hair). Some wires can hold up to 1000 cores.

As a rule, a single-core type does not come into contact with equipment, but is used to create network highways underground, in walls, etc. This is due to the property of copper thick veins breaking under the influence of frequent bends. It is worth noting that single-core systems “crash” into sockets very well.

A multi-core type of cable is not used for “cutting” into sockets, but it tolerates various deformations (bends, twisting). But at the same time, this type does not preserve the signal so well (fast attenuation is noted). In connection with these characteristics, multicore cables are used to create patch codes designed to connect network devices to sockets.

Cables are also distinguished by location, for:

  • internal laying (do not burn and do not create smoke);
  • external laying (have a sheath of polyethylene protecting the cable from the sun and weather vagaries).

It is important to note such a criterion for the differentiation of twisted pair cables as the data transfer frequency. It is displayed in categories from 1 to 7, where the first is used to create telephone lines (0.1 MHz), and the 7th is designed for ultra-fast transmission of information at a speed of about 10 Gbit/s (600 MHz) and the creation of computer networks. In addition to the main categories, there are additional modifications: 5e, 6a, and 7a, - improved versions of their analogs.

The most optimal option for home and office is category 5, supporting a frequency of information transfer up to 100 MHz, 100-150 Mbit/s. The vast majority of offices work in category 5. In turn, telecommunication networks operate in categories 5, 5E, and 6, depending on the required speed and cable length. For example, a 50-meter cable of category 7 provides speeds of up to 40 Gb/s, and a 15-meter cable of the same category up to 100 Gb/s.

Fiber optic cable
Fiber optic cable is used to transmit information using light. The optic cable consists of thin transparent fiberglass and insulation. Through fiberglass, light travels long distances. There can be several optical fibers in one cable.

Advantages of fiber optic cable before twisted pair:

  • High-speed data transfer;
  • Small losses;
  • No influence of electromagnetic fields. The optical cable does not need grounding, and optical equipment during a thunderstorm does not fade from static discharges;
  • High noise immunity. Electromagnetic interference can not distort the light signal.
  • Secrecy of transmitted information. You cannot connect to an optical cable to listen to the network without violating the integrity of the cable.
  • Lightweight and size;
  • The possibility of laying over long distances (up to 150 km, depending on the type of cable and equipment).

Optical fiber cable according to the conditions of use is:

  • For laying inside buildings;
  • Suspension. Such a cable comes with a steel wire, cable or fiberglass rod for hanging on buildings, electrical supports, etc .;
  • Underground. It consists of armor made of corrugated steel tape and aramid yarn layer. Armor protects the cable from damage by rodents;
  • Underwater. Designed for use underwater.

Previously, the cost of fiber optic cable, laying, and operation was very high, so it was not common when building small networks. Mostly optics was used to build high-speed trunk links. Now the price for fiber-optic cable for the Internet has become more affordable, so providers often use it when building networks.

The UScomService store offers its customers to buy fiber optic cable at an affordable price. You can order fiber optic cable in bulk from 100 meters.
